This change had already been proposed by Ventura Terra in his urban plan (later taken up by Carlos Ramos), which envisioned the consolidation of public services in this location.

Sacred Art Museum

The former Episcopal Palace, now the Museum of Sacred Art of Funchal, underwent significant renovation after the great earthquake of 1748 but retains a very restrained, Mannerist architectural style, devoid of the flamboyant and sculptural decorative excesses typical of national Baroque. The project was overseen by Captain of Engineers and Royal Master Builder Domingos Rodrigues Martins.
